Classes for every age, from tiny warriors to seasoned fighters
SOFMA offers a full range of martial arts and fitness classes for kids and adults at our Nedlands dojo. Find the one that fits, then come and try it for free.
Little Dragons
Want your child to learn self control, respect, manners and confidence, or what to do in an emergency and how to deal with strangers? Our Little Dragons program is an early-learning martial arts curriculum designed for the attention spans of this age group.
Classes are fast-paced, fun and educational, building motor skills, listening, coordination and life skills like personal safety, stranger awareness and fire safety. Your Little Dragon learns to control their body, focus their mind and carry a quiet confidence.
Kids Freestyle Martial Arts
Martial arts truly is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. It teaches them to kick, punch and block, but it also teaches the life skills embedded in the ancient arts.
We cannot always be there for our kids or shield them from every challenge, but we can prepare them: more self-confident, more resilient, more disciplined, and able to defend themselves. SOFMA is a freestyle system, taught with an open mind, merging traditional and modern technique into a martial art that is relevant today.
Adult Freestyle Martial Arts
Our philosophy is simple: if it works, use it. SOFMA draws the best from a range of martial arts, with self-defence moves, katas and strike work at its core. Considered a form of karate, it also borrows from Thai kickboxing, teaching you to fight from a Thai stance and use its full toolkit.
We place real emphasis on grabs, holds and close-combat technique, which makes the system genuinely practical for self-defence. We follow a clear belt hierarchy and the ethical code of Bushido. We teach self-defence; we do not promote fighting or violence.
The belt curriculum
Shadow Warriors
Men & women, all agesMuay Thai
Muay Thai traces back to ancient Thailand, where it was used in warfare and self-defence. It gives students a complete striking system with strong self-defence application and a grading syllabus, similar to the coloured belts used in most martial arts.
A beginner class starts with a warm-up, skipping, stretching and conditioning, then shadow boxing and pad work with a partner. Our classes are a great workout and suit men and women of all ages. Coach Dorn leads the Shadow Warriors, bringing years of competitive and instructional experience to the mats.
Silverbacks
All levelsBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA
BJJ is a grappling art built on ground fighting, technique and positioning, letting a smaller person defend against a larger, stronger opponent through skill rather than strength. Our Silverbacks program covers the full curriculum: takedowns, guard work, sweeps, transitions and submissions, alongside MMA drills that bring striking and grappling together.
The idea behind tap or snap is that you can train at full intensity safely: you tap when caught, your partner releases, and you both learn from it. Led by Mr Phillips and Coach Dorn.
Private Lessons
A great way to focus, advance and intensify your training, built entirely around you. Whether you want to get proficient in one or several of our arts, improve fitness or burn fat, we build the plan around your goals. Private lessons suit anyone supplementing group training, pushing their skills, preparing for a grading, training with friends, or working around shift work and FIFO rosters. They also make a good gift.

Ladies Self-Defence Workshops
Self-defence is a skill better to have and not need, than to need and not know.
Women-only workshops for ages 16 and up. No experience and no fitness required. We cover verbal judo, the A, B, Cs of self-defence, grabs from the front and back, and ground defence. Proceeds are donated to the Zonta House Refuge Association.
Next workshop: dates are announced here and on our social pages. Register your interest and we will let you know.
